LPG or methane: differences, consumption, costs and factors to consider before purchasing the car or converting with the system.

The time has come to choose the power supply for the new car or system: better the LPG or CNG for cars? For the environment, between LPG and Methane there is a considerable difference, the methane it is less polluting, but for the driver's pocket the needle would hang on LPG when it comes to maintenance costs and again on methane when it comes to yield and refueling costs.LPG or methane? This is the dilemma.

LPG or CNG car, differences

Before making a choice, it is better to know these two power sources. We bring you two cards with useful information that will help you choose betweenmethane or LPG car.

Source of Methane: it is extracted from natural wells and can be produced by digesting organic waste (biogas).
Source LPG: it is a mixture of fuels, mainly propane and butane, by-products of the crude oil refining process. It can also be extracted as natural gas.
Uses: the methane it is mainly used as a substitute for gasoline, propane and butane (LPG) are used in different sectors, from heating to catering, it is used in agriculture and in the automotive sector as a fuel.

Effects on the environment: the methane releases smaller amounts of greenhouse gases. LPG is more polluting than methane but cleaner than gasoline.

Security: it is generally said that the methane it is safer than the LPG. The methane it is lighter so it easily disperses into the atmosphere in the event of a leak. On the contrary, LPG is heavier than air and therefore tends to accumulate in the lower layers. Due to its specific weight it tends to accumulate and being highly flammable, the risk of fire is greater.

Car fuel, LPG or CNG:refueling costs

LPG has a current price of € 0.83 per liter. The price of the methane is slightly higher, we are talking about € 0.98 per kg. Both prices are very advantageous when compared to the cost of gasoline. Having to choose between methane or LPG for the car, what needs to be evaluated? We see it in the next paragraph.

Gas system for cars:better LPG or methane?

With the spread of cars LPG, the price of this gas has increased by 25% in recent years and there is a slight upward trend.

An LPG system can cost from 550 euros up to 1200 euros. The LPG it produces about double the amount of energy produced by the methane, in fact, a methane car will lose power but gain efficiency: one kg of methane guarantees a yield equal to that of 1.56 liters of petrol. The plants a methane they are more elaborate and therefore the installation costs are higher. A plant a methane costs from 1000 to 1700 euros. The higher price of amethane systemit is related to natural gas storage cylinders.

The first step to understand whether to choose a system a LPG or methane is to get a quote for the installation of the system. With current prices the LPG it would seem cheaper than the methane but with the increase in prices, this convenience may no longer be so tangible.

In summary, if you want to convert your petrol car into aLPG car, you must consider that:

  • the purchase costs for the LPG system are lower than for methane.
  • LPG refueling costs are higher than methane, methane has a higher mileage even if it apparently costs more.
  • Both methane and LPG are less power supplies"Sprinting", therefore there will be a decline in acceleration. The decline is more marked with methane.
  • The LPG system must be replaced every 10 years and must be overhauled as required in the booklet issued by the person who installed the aftermarket system.
  • The methane system must be overhauled, with cylinder replacement, every 4 - 5 years.

New car, better LPG or methane?

On new cars, the LPG system checks are performed at the same time as the various coupons. Even for new cars fueled with natural gas, the gas cylinders for methane fueling must be replaced every 4 - 5 years.

For the prices and models of cars with standard LPG, please refer to the pageLPG car. There are a great many cars with methane fueling as standard. Among the various models we point out:

  • Audi A3
  • Dr 5, methane SUV
  • Fiat 500L
  • Fiat Doblò
  • Fiat Panda
  • Fiat Punto
  • Fiat Qubo
  • Lancia Ypsilon
  • Mercedes Benz B class
  • Opel Combo
  • Opel Zafira
  • Seat Leon
  • Seat Mii
  • Skoda Octavia
  • Volkswagen Golf
  • Volkswagen Up!

What is the cheapest fuel

By far, the cheapest fuel is methane. In the estimate we excluded alternative propulsions, namely, electric drive, hybrid drive and hydrogen fuel cells. Taking into account the classic power sources (petrol, diesel, LPG and methane), we see that:

if you travel 30,000 kilometers, on an annual basis, the expense to be faced with an engine that travels 8 km with a liter is approximately 6,683 euros if you drive acarpetrol.

The price drops to 5,426 euros if the power supply is diesel but the most considerable savings are found with themethane, in fact, with this power supply, to travel 30,000 kilometers, "only" 2,471 euros are needed, against the 3,256 euros of LPG.
