DIY bioethanol: the production ofbioethanolis much more complex than that ofbiodiesel, in fact if with thebiodieselyou can talk aboutdo-it-yourself, with thebioethanolyou have to deal with the sugary fermentation.

The fuel in question becamepopularthanks to the spread of stoves andbioethanol fireplaces. It is a basically volatile and extremely flammable chemical compound. The formula ofethanolis "C.H3CH2OH ", not allethanolexisting can be definedbio, as, in addition to the sugary fermentation of plant parts, it can be obtained from petroleum derivatives.

How is theBioethanol?
It is difficult to talk about "DIY bioethanol"Because the production phases of thebioethanolthey are three and all quite complex:

-preparation of molasses

Production of bioethanol: molasses
In addition to being complex, the preparation of molasses can also be expensive. The starting substrate forprepare bioethanolin a simpler way it is given by sugar cane or sugary sorghum, however it is possibleproduce bioethanolalso by exploiting substances rich in starches (farms, potatoes…) or cellulose (straw, wood waste…).

A substrate based on sucrose (sugar cane or sorghum) allows you toprepare bioethanolin a simpler way because in this case, lukewarm water is enough to extract the sugars.

Production of bioethanol: fermentation
Also for the fermentation phase it is possible to implement different strategies. The simplest way is to place the molasses at more or less high temperatures to allow bacteria and yeasts to promote fermentation and obtain liquids rich in ethanol.

Production of bioethanol: distillation
Distillation can take place with different techniques and has the purpose of extracting pure ethanol, eliminating waste liquids. At room temperature, theethanolit mixes well with water and this first split takes place through the distillation process. A simple distillation fails to achievebioethanol100% pure, the purity percentage stops at 96%. For this reason, to getbioethanolpure it will be necessary to implement more complex processes such as low pressure distillation.

Unfortunately the stages ofproduction of bioethanol they are not so simple and there is a fair amount of energy, especially in the fermentation phase which, as seen, takes place at controlled temperatures and pressures.

Industries currently aim at produce bioethanol starting from cellulose (wood waste) where the extraction of sugary substances is hindered by the lignin-rich plant cell wall. In the US, companies producebioethanolespecially starting from starches (corn), the molasses obtained with the dry grinding of corn grains (dry grinding) is mixed with water and brought to high temperatures. Only after this phase is fermentation with enzymes and distillation under pressure of 125 mm / Hg started.
