Ravintsara essential oil: properties, importance of 1,8-cineole and the chemical composition of essential camphor oil.

L'Ravintsara essential oil it should not be confused with the one produced starting from Aromatic Ravensara. L'Ravintsara essential oil it is extracted from the evergreen treeCinnamomum camphora, commonly called "Camphor". Call himcamphor essential oil, in fact, it is not wrong even if there is a small distinction to be made: with the name of "Ravintsara essential oil"We should refer only to the variety of Ciannamomum camphora grown on the island of Madagascar.

L'Camphor essential oilhe is famous for hispropertybalsamic and anti-inflammatory. It can be used as anatural mothproofto protect the wood from moths and, at the same time, perfume cabinets and drawers.

Therecamphor(Ciannamomum camphora) is a plant of the Lauraceae family, native to Asia. Camphor has a thick crown, leathery leaves and white flowers that bloom to form flowering panicles located at the axil of the leaves. Small red drupes develop from the flowers. L'camphor essential oilit is extracted from the bark. From the innermost sections of the wood, theraw camphor, obtained in the form of crystals soluble in alcohol and oil, theraw camphorit is then refined by subsequent sublimations by distillation. In its natural habitat, the camphor tree can reach a height of 25-30 meters.

Ravintsara essential oil and cineole

Its composition sees a dense list of active ingredients, including the very popular 1,8-cineole, its fame is due to its medicinal uses: it is the basic ingredient of various mouthwashes and cough syrups. Its common name iseucalyptolbecause for the first time it was extracted from eucalyptus essential oil (Eucalyptus globulus). 1.8-cineole is found in high percentages also inCannabisand in the essential oil of laurel. Its uses range from pharmaceuticals to the agricultural sector where it is used as a natural insecticide.

Warning! This does not mean that you can use theRavintsara essential oil as a repellent: in industry, its smell is used asbaitto attract insects.

According to toxicological studies, if used in high dosages, eucalyptol can be dangerous to health. If ingested or inhaled in high quantities, it can cause respiratory problems. The same study reports that the lethal dose in rats is 2,480 mg per kg. The benefits ofCamphor essential oil they are mainly related to the 1,8-cineole compound which, as shown below, represents only one percent of the chemical composition, so using this essential oil it is really difficult to reach the levels considered toxic.

Eucalyptol has been shown to be effective in controlling the hypersecretion of mucus in the airways (this is why it is used in medicine in the formulation of sedative drugs for coughs and colds) and in the treatment of rhinosinusitis.

In 2000, a study published in volume 14 ofPhytotherapy Research,highlighted the anti-inflammatory properties of 1,8-Cineole; according to what the researchers stated, if applied locally, cineole-based lotions would be able to soothe pains of various kinds by carrying out an anti-inflammatory action.

The composition just indicated is only indicative and refers tocamphor essential oil. When it comes to natural products and essential oils, each production is a story in itself: everything can change according to the harvest period, the botanical variety used, the place of cultivation ... Just think that in some cases, the content of 1, 8-cineole can represent 40% of the composition. It is difficult to find commercially an essential oil that contains such high percentages of cineole, the plants that return a camphor essential oil with high percentages of cineole are those cultivated in Madagascar, known as Ravintsara.
